We recently sat down to interview James, one of our sober-living community residents. His story is one of addiction to empowerment. We’re grateful to be part of James’ recovery journey.

How did James connect with Providence Network?

James first connected with Providence Network through a local church. Many of the individuals involved in the homes were also part of the same faith community, and the support from both the residents and staff played a significant role in his journey. They shared a common mission—helping those struggling with addiction, homelessness, and behavioral challenges. Being part of that vision became a blessing.

What has Providence Network meant in your life?

Providence Network’s homes are all sobriety-focused, providing a stable environment free from the distractions of drugs and alcohol. The value of this kind of housing is immeasurable—you can’t put a price on it.

For those who haven’t experienced this journey, let me share: the FirstStep two-year programs are just the beginning. In that time, you build a strong foundation, but recovery continues in small, steady steps. That’s why NextStep homes are so essential. They provide a structured level of accountability through permanent supportive housing where services can be accessed as needed. The Providence Network staff is so intentional and purposeful. They are available for counseling and personal help. It really benefits our recovery.

What are some lessons learned for living in recovery?

Relapses happen—one occurred recently. What followed was powerful. In a house meeting the next night, standards were reaffirmed, and the resident was given the chance to return to FirstStep housing. The way it was handled—with consistency and accountability—made all the difference.

Consistency is key. It builds trust and reinforces expectations, much like road signs guiding the way. NextStep homes and staff support serves as markers of accountability, helping residents stay on track.

Sobriety thrives in a stable, structured environment. Knowing there’s a long-term home available—while also being held accountable—creates security. It allows residents to focus on daily life, making relapse less likely.

This isn’t about enablement—it’s about empowerment. Residents pay rent, stay sober, and follow rules. There’s nothing weak about pursuing sobriety; it’s a full-time commitment that requires dedication. Providence Network empowers individuals daily with a simple question: Do you want this or not?

What do you want people to know about FirstStep and NextStep?

FirstStep is an “all-in or all-out” opportunity. The program’s requirements can be challenging, but I’ve witnessed the transformation that happens on the other side. Every step taken, every choice made, every word spoken—by faith, after two years—it’s all worth it.

NextStep isn’t about graduating from a problem—it’s about stepping into an empowering environment with more freedom, yet continued social accountability. While it’s not as structured as FirstStep, it provides a stable, secure home away from the past—a crucial next step toward lasting change.

What do you want to tell the donors and friends supporting Providence Network?

Other than the local church, I can’t think of a more valuable resource in Denver than Providence Network. It plays a vital role in helping people walk in sobriety and restoring them to the life God originally intended for them.

Financial support is important—it sustains the homes and programs. Providence Network is highly donor-effective, with zero tolerance for financial misuse because lives are on the line. They take this responsibility seriously. If you have any desire to make a difference, this is the place to do it.

If you’re looking for a place to plant a seed, plant it here. I’ve seen firsthand the goodness that comes from it, and I couldn’t recommend a better place to invest.

From addiction to empowerment

James’ journey from addiction to empowerment is a testament to his resilience, faith, and determination to build a better life. He didn’t just overcome addiction—he transformed his life, proving that true change is possible with perseverance and the right support. His story is an inspiration to anyone seeking a fresh start, showing that recovery isn’t just about leaving the past behind, but about stepping boldly into a future filled with purpose, stability, and hope.
